Good Bye Summer!

Teachers came back to school this week and we are getting ready for what is going to be an AWESOME school year!

I received lots of summer reading post cards and will be posting them on the bulletin board outside the Rock Springs Library Media Center this week. If you completed the Rock Springs summer reading program, don't forget to bring me your completed form either at open house on Thursday (2pm-6pm at Rock Springs) or during the first week of school. I will have your prizes for participating sometime after the first day of school.

I hope you all had a GREAT summer and did a lot of reading this summer. I have some exciting things planned for the Rock Springs Library this year and can't wait to share some of these things with you once we get back to school!

Can you believe that 3 weeks from today we will all be back at school?? I have had a great summer, but it did go by fast! If you are sending me a post card with your summer book review on it, make sure you send it soon, I will be working on the bulletin board the week before you come back to school.

Summer Road Trip part 1

I am BACK!

I was hoping to blog while I was on my road trip, but Internet connection issues made it hard for me to post. So here is my wrap up in pictures from my trip to Massachusetts, Maine and New York.

We celebrated my grandfathers 90th birthday with a big party - do you know anyone who is 90?

We visited the beach on Cape Cod - the water is a bit cold, but it is my FAVORITE place in the world!
We also went to Oqunguit, Maine to visit our friend, author/illustrator Matt Tavares and his family, we went for a walk along a cliff walk called Marginal Way - isn't it beautiful!

Matt also showed us his new BIG computer screen that he uses to create some of his illustrations - we also got a sneak peak of two of his new books coming out soon, can't wait to share them with you in the Rock Springs Library when they come out!

We went on a Duck Boat tour of Boston, even though I used to live in Boston, it was fun to ride around on a "duck boat" and see the city - if you ever visit Boston I definitely suggest this!

Boston is also home to the STANLEY CUP CHAMPION Boston Bruins hockey team!

and home to some cute little ducks from a famous book (can you name the book?)

As we were driving around on the Cape we ran into this - a working water wheel in Brewseter, MA - the wheel is used to make Corn Meal, the wheel was just recently replaced and the stone to make the corn is being replaced now, so I was unable to get some freshly ground corn meal.

At the end of our trip we spent a few days in New York. This is a walkway that was built out of an old railroad bridge, it goes across the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, NY and it is over a mile long!

My daughter and I got to spend the last day of our trip in her favorite city - New York City - here is a picture of Times Square!

I also visited a BUNCH of libraries during my travels and read a lot of books while I was on my trip - stay tuned for more pictures!

Road Trip!

As most of you know, I am from Massachusetts and my family still lives there, so every summer I pack up my kids and we take a LONG drive to Massachusetts to visit my family, go to the beach and maybe take in a Red Sox game. This summer my trip has been delayed a little because of a car problem, but hopefully we will be on the road soon.

Here is the bag of books I am bringing with me on my trip -

- notice the book on CD that I am bringing, audio books, whether downloaded on iPods or checked out of the library on CD's are GREAT to listen to in the car. For me, funny books are the BEST to listen to - our selection for the first half of our trip is Framed by Gordon Korman, a VERY funny author!

My friend Mr. Schu (a librarian at a school in Oakbook, IL) is taking an even LONGER road trip and he is blogging about it, check out his blog for all of his adventures.

Happy National Flip Flop Day!

Today is National Flip Flop day! Check out Anita Silvey's Book A Day Almanac website to get some great recommendations of books to read this summer (this is where I found out it was national flip flop day!).

Rock Springs Summer Reading Update: I have already gotten some postcards with some great book recommendations - keep them coming! I hope you have all signed up for the public library reading program already, if not.. why not??

I've also been visiting the library to check out some great books to read, here I am catching up on some reading outside the Hamilton Mill branch of the library

I just finished rereading the book Mr. Poppers Penguins, the movie comes out today and I am going to go see it with my daughter, I will report back on how it was (the book is a GREAT summer read!)

Summer Reading - The Penderwicks at Point Mouette

This week I read the third installment of the story of the Penderwick sisters by Jeanne Birdsall, The Pendwerwicks at Point Mouette. This story is another summer adventure of the Penderwick Family, this time the three youngest Penderwick girls are off to Maine to spend time with their Aunt Claire while older sister Rosiland is off to the New Jersey shore with a friend and Dad is in England with his new wife. The girls, of course find some adventures and fun with new friends and old in a cottage off the coast of Maine.

If you enjoyed the first two Penderwick books you will love this installment. If you have never read the Penderwick series, check it out at the Gwinnett Public Library - these books are a great choice for fourth and fifth graders or even read aloud to younger students.

Summer Reading Kick off at the Library

I hope your summer so far is FABULOUS! Mrs. Schmidt is STILL working, getting the library ready for a rest this summer, but I wanted to tell you about the Gwinnet Public Library Summer Reading Kick off this week. On Thursday (that's tomorrow!) June 2nd Eric Litwin, the author of Pete the Cat (and one of the Rock Springs authors this year)will be performing at the Collins Hill library at 3pm. If you missed his performance at Rock Springs last month, you MUST catch him at the library, his show is TONS of fun, filled with stories and singing and dancing - even the adults will love him!

If you miss him on Thursday, he is also performing at the Hamilton Mill branch on Saturday at 11am. If you go to this performance, get your parents to take you to the Carvel ice cream shop across the street for a treat!

How is your summer reading going? I have already read two books and I have a whole big STACK waiting for me!

Welcome to Mrs. Schmidt's summer reading blog! I am hoping to post about two or three times each week with some pictures from where I'm reading this summer, some great book suggestions and also some ideas of things to do this summer. So grab your book and your sunscreen and lets go!
